1. Light
- Indoors: Needs bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sun in the morning or late afternoon, but avoid harsh midday sunlight.
- Outdoors: If planted in the garden, choose a spot with partial to full sun.
2. Temperature
- Ideal range: Between 16–24°C (60–75°F).
- Protect the plant from temperatures below 5°C (41°F), as it is sensitive to frost.
- Indoors, avoid placing it near cold drafts or heat sources such as air conditioners or heaters.
3. Soil
- Use well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0–7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral).
- A cactus or succulent mix with some added peat moss works well.
4. Watering
- Indoors: Water when the top 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) of soil are dry.
- Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot. Ensure the pot has good drainage.
- Outdoors: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
5. Humidity
- Norfolk Island Pines prefer high humidity.
- If indoor air is dry, mist the leaves regularly or place a tray of water near the pot (without the bottom touching the water).
6. Fertilizing
- Feed with a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows.
7. Pruning and Maintenance
- Minimal pruning is needed. Just remove dry or yellowing branches.
- Avoid cutting the central leader (main top branch), as this affects the tree’s natural shape.
8. Repotting
- Repot every 2–3 years or when roots start to grow out of the drainage holes.
- Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage.
